Darkness Within Final by PatrickBrown Darkness Within Final by PatrickBrown
Ok so here is my 100% completed character for my comic Darkness Within :D

I've had alot of concepts and have been back and forth with ideas on how our hero should look, and this is what I'm settling for. I really enjoyed setting up this scene too, I haven't tried doing rain too much so it was great to try something new!

I really wish I could tell you the storyline and how it's all going to work, but I have to keep it top secret for now.. Until I actually get this thing going at least. Let's hope I do ;)

My next step is going to be turning this dude into a 3D model :D I'm pumped for that! Just for fun really.. I'd really like to hear what you think about the final design of this guy.

Let me know what you think!

I liked this design for him since those sketches you made. He looks very believable and you can really... how to put it... sympathize with him, seeing as he's not some anabolic-pumped looking superhero in tights, I guess I'm just done with that superhero cliché. All the little details still make him a unique character, if he hadn't been already. The tears here and there lining his clothing can easily be interpreted in different ways; either from battles fought and won- or from the 'Darkness Within' trying to claw it's way out. I could, however, also be overanalizing here.
I also like how you re-used the original idea with the tribal/tattoo thing, how it's more of a glowing aura now. The slight glowing energy leaving off his right arm do adds a nice little something, too, and the way the reds in the picture have the highest saturation really makes it stand out.

There's not too much to say about your style on the character itself and the coloring, seeing as I'm a great fan of your work and it always looks great whenever you use it. The 'strong' shading adds to the athmosphere of the whole picture just as much as the rain does.

And that scene and background! you could easily use this picture as the front cover of the first magazine issue of Darkness Within, if you so desired. Very nice!
I especially adore the rain hitting the ground and also how you worked out the asphalt. though the texture is really big, it gives away a more comic-like feel and fits perfectly with the character.

The only, and I mean only, critique I could leave, would be on the already highly praised ground. It does look a little distorted, like it curves down right in front of the camera, but again, this could also be me seeing things.
And there's bonus points for all the detail added on the rain on the car. Seems to me that it's flowing down the metal surface ANd the windshield just right.

This artwork is overall really nice and- though not packed with ten-thousand different characters or collapsing buildings, is coplete in itself and truly gives you a feeling of a lingering Darkness Within.

The choice in coloring is what strikes me the most. The contrast between the muted colors and the high intensity of the red is very well executed and creative. I think you could have given the rim lighting around the character brighter highlights just to separate him from the background more. Some of the red wisps of energy are very intense, so I would imagine that light reflecting onto his clothing at an almost equal amount.

Also, I may have liked to see you blur the background out just a bit to add some depth of field to this. This looks like it could be a still from an animation cell. Just adding some of those FX could have really pushed this onto another level.

Overall this is very well done. I'm a fan of your work. You have a very unique style in both lines and coloring. I really do look forward to your updates!

I like the tall, lean, muscled look...not bulky like some heroes, but definitely powerful
the face and hair - badass, love the hair and beard, just right for that face and body
strong hands
would like to see closer up of eyes... have a thing for eyes
I am new fan of yours

I love this! This is my most favourite from you! And you have A LOT of great artwork! Could you draw the tattoo symbol for me? If you could, that'd be great! Keep up the incredible work!

I love these series of illustrations, but just one thought, his face reminds me too much of Dylan McDermott of The Practice fame. And I dont really see him as being particularly strong/athletic/leading character material... But cant wait to see the 3D model and how the series goes..

This is excellent. As with the rest of your work, this is a incredibly appealing perfect compromise between stylized and photo realistic. Your original character is in fact original and interesting, the perspective composition and dynamics are engaging and the lighting and rain effects are seamless and convincing. Your characters face and body language are both extremely expressive. Look forward to seeing more. Wanted this to be a critique but not enough words and I don't really have any suggestions seems flawless to me. PS Your fan art is excellent as well
