Darkness Within Concepts by PatrickBrown Darkness Within Concepts by PatrickBrown
I've been messing around with my character again haha! This time I wanted to see what he'd look like if he had shorter hair and was a bit LESS buff haha! I think this will make him more realistic, every superhero you see these days is super buff and wears tights... So I'm going with a casual kind of super dude ;) Little bit emo maybe :)

I'd love to hear some thoughts.. I really want to get my character locked in and ready so I can try and start my first comic!

Here's my previous concepts:

I'm still going to add some sort of tattoo to the new version, you just can't see it in the sketch haha!

Let me know what you think :D

I am so in love with this character design...I only wish I had thought of it first :D  His whole anatomy (this version) is just so satisfying to look at, but maybe that's just because I'm partial to lean muscular types. I also think the legs are just right, not too skinny.
UntoldPromises Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2014  Student Digital Artist
Looks kinda like Chuck Norris teehee.
I love it! :D
paradeofzombies Featured By Owner May 8, 2013  Student Digital Artist
I really like the fact that the legs are a bit "too skinny", as someone said. I think it makes the style more interesting and creative ;D really awesome, love the expressions as well!
MooreCreativity Featured By Owner Nov 7, 2012
just to clarify I just think the legs are a little too skinny...they don't necessarily need to be buff just thicker
MooreCreativity Featured By Owner Nov 7, 2012
I like that you went with a little less buff than most, but the legs need to be a little more buff than they are now if you want them to balance with them arms...just my two cents

I love the concept of this character, especially the facial expressions that you've included in this. I have a question though, where do you start when doing something along these lines? I'm curious because I want to try something like this with a character I have in mind but I don't know where to begin...

WOW! Really cool character

Checked out your previous work for your character, and I'd have to say this is the best one yet (Of course I miss the tattoo though.. but then again it's a sketch so....) Good luck!

oh, he looks so cool!

I think less buff is definitely better it really would help to make him more realistic. Maybe in certain situations he would be more pumped up? This is awesome though I really like your artwork.

Like the different angles. Nice picture yo

I really like the shorter hair. It makes him look a little older and I think that could produce a bit more drama. (Someone who's been around the block a few times as opposed to a kid doing stuff for the first time)

The one on the lower right of the page just seems ridiculously lovable to me. The scruffiness is great, and the expressions are priceless :D
virginterry Featured By Owner Dec 1, 2010  Student Digital Artist
doesn't he kind of look like chuck norris?

I prefer him with the shorter hair.
RennyLenny Featured By Owner Nov 30, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
nice man. I think the not-so-buff physique is working really well. Probably makes it easier for the reader to connect with the character too. Reminds me of Alex Mercer from the game Protoype (playing it to shreds atm) or Cole from inFamous, pretty normal looking guys wielding mahoosive powers :D

Very much I want to make a tattoo in Patrick Brown's style, there are variants?
tatltail Featured By Owner Nov 29, 2010  Student Filmographer
Wow. Thats hawt X3 lol. He looks great to me! Basically realistic body shape and a cute hair cut. At first he reminded me of Alistair from Dragon Age, but not he kind of reminds me of Wolverine for some reason...anyway, I love him!
xenadus Featured By Owner Nov 28, 2010
I think this looks amazing, I like the idea of a skinnier average guy as the hero, but i'd go for more of a gritty look. Maybe some cuts or bruises or maybe even have him look slightly emaciated like although the tattoo gives him great power when he's "supped up" its draining for his normal self. depending on how far you'd like to go. But I digress, amaaaazing!

Why not both? One of the typical comments of a Cartoon/Comic/Animé serie is that usually it takes more then one season to let the protagonist change appearance, at least in an obvious way.
If you plan to make a story/comic with this character, he could, through the story, get a reason to cut his hair short? Or reversed: give him a reason he should stop caring about his some traumatic "I want vengeance" thing where he could be blind to anything not relevant to his goal.
Maybe have him use an array of outfits that he'll wear over the course of every story too, perhaps?

I use a lot of your pictures as backgrounds, especially now that my Mobile Phone can change its background automatically every half hour and Wallpaper Master does the same for my Laptop.
And if its one thing, I've put all your Darkness Within pictures to use. Reminds me of Jackie Estacado but at the same time feels kind of different (and good for that matter).
In fact, Heart Of Darkness is used on both. And I am beyond pleased to have great artwork appear on either instead of some lame 'concept art' I have to make do with usually...(if I haven't gotten anything good from DeviantArt at all!)
IllustriousVar Featured By Owner Nov 27, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I definitely prefer this one over the long haired buff one.

On the subject of choosing between a male or a female character, why not both? Focus on the male character in the beginning then introduce a secondary character (being the female, or vice versa) later in the story with a similar conflict, that way you could have both and still have room to mess around with their stories a bit, one could be evil or they could work together, etc.

Just throwing stuff out there :P

I also like the idea of a more modern tattoo, sounds like it would work better to me.

ChiTheDesigner Featured By Owner Nov 26, 2010
I like this version. Makes up for a more human, max panyeish something.
This might enable for some more human characteristics.

I like the less buff kind of character a lot better! Buff types are not really my cup of tea, so I like the idea :D
He looks more like a "Nathan Drake"-type now, and I like that !
Do a colored version of him and I'll give my full opinion :D
zuizuizui Featured By Owner Nov 25, 2010
it is awesome
way better than the previous versions

go with the girl! u sure know why want that one :D if she cant be the character, then she has to be THE nemesis :D
super-illustrator0 Featured By Owner Nov 25, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
Remember why it is that artists use muscles (and boobs on the female characters): Image-wise, it's just more attractive.
If you want to create a homely character, then this is that. However, I'd suggest nicer clothes (which opens up a world of possibilities, so I'll stop right now.)
Tristan-AtTheEnd Featured By Owner Nov 25, 2010  Professional General Artist
hey man i am digging the fact that he looks more like a normal dude.
As far as the tattoo goes check out this cool french tattooist called 'noon' (his name should come up in google search)
I just got some work done by him and his style is super different. Could be some good inspiration
Keep up the good stuff ;)

I love seeing your original sketches they're so cool! =D
pretty laid back dude, i like the concept - if you choose a hero rather the heroine I advice you to go with this design, it looks very cool :)
anubiseyes Featured By Owner Nov 25, 2010  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I really like how u make expressions (face and body wise), I myself need to work on that.
Cool looking character, definitely gives it a bit more of realism. (I do would prefer a female character in a similar version like more realism instead of a supermodel :p like the other version u have) but that is just me. Can't wait to see the final official character and the comic itself!!!
Xidon Featured By Owner Nov 25, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
I love the two sketches on the left. The bottom left pose is a fantastic pose and shows how heroic a less bulky character can be. And the top left is super cool. very dark with the eyes like that. I feel in the main larger image. His neck seems too fat for his head. it sort of seems to cut out the little bit of the top of his right shoulder I feel like I should see. Great stuff again dude.
